I remember when I got the idea that DaisyChain should exist. I was newly elected to the board of my condominium, a 170+ unit building in Brooklyn. We were trying to figure out how to comply with LL97, New York City's landmark climate law, which gives letter grades to buildings based on their CO2 emissions. Our building had an F. Embarrassing. But more to the point, expensive! That F came with serious carbon fines, starting in just a few years.

We commissioned a study to figure out what we could do. Over 20 recommendations came back, each with an estimated carbon reduction, ranging from cleaning our boilers to putting solar panels on our roof. Most of the recommendations barely reduced our emissions at all. Only one intervention made a meaningful impact; switching our building from gas to electric heat. This one intervention eliminated over half our emissions, more than all the other recommendations combined! The problem was the price tag. Several million dollars, with a 20-year payback.

Like a lot of people, I care about climate change. I don't like the idea of hotter heat waves, dying coral reefs, increased wildfires and hurricanes. But like a lot of people, I also care about money. These two things I care about were in direct conflict.

Maybe it didn't have to be this way. Maybe there was a way to electrify buildings less expensively, perhaps even profitably. I started investigating, learning, and meeting people pioneering solutions, some of whom became my co-founders.
